Aight, so… Ever since I started this site, I’ve known that the week after WrestleMania, I was gonna drop an entry about wrasslin’. So this shit here is like 10 months in the making. I haven’t mentioned it much on here thus far, but I’m a huge wrestling fan- been watchin’ since ’87, and still do. I’ve had a lot of interests in my years, but wrestling is only second to music as the one that’s kept my interest for the longest time. Wrote a blog about it, like to read it? Here it go:
The ’90s (And Mariah) Loved The ’80s
03/27/2010So… today, Mariah Carey hits the big 4-0. Even though she tends to come off like the old broad who thinks she’s still cool, and I’ve always been “blah” about most of her music, MC is aiiight with me. Matter fact, I’d wife her up if I was sure she didn’t have a drinking problem and she wasn’t wild’n out with Nick Cannon. She’s also a big ’80s R&B fan, as can be gathered by how many classic joints she’s revisited over the course of her career. There’s also that awful Glitter movie she made, but that’s neither here nor there. Here’s a few of her remixes from the late-’90s and the tracks they borrowed from.
(Oh, and don’t y’all go judgin’ me about seein’ Glitter- my niece used to fukk with that movie hard.)
Ladies’ Night!
03/24/2010Along with a gang of other shit that’s declined in hip-hop over the years, female MCs have lost a lot of the presence they used to have. It’s always been a male-dominated game, but there was always some chicks on the mic makin’ their own moves. While there is one girl currently developing quite a buzz for herself, it’s been like five or six years since the last time, and that didn’t turn out too festive in the long run. In the ’90s, females stepped up to the plate more than they have in any other decade so far.
“She Keeps On Passin’ Me By…”
03/22/2010“Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love. “- Charlie Brown
The rapper always gets the girl. He gets the girl, he has the girl, he’s always had the girl… because he is the shit. Not only does he have the girl, but he might have your girl. He might even tell you that he committed all kinds of nasty acts with her for nothin’ while you, the listener, do more for her and receive less. Not only does he get the girl AND your girl, but all the girls. When it comes to the women, it’s rarely in the rapper’s nature to not get the girl, or be turned down or ignored by her. And even if he did, he wouldn’t rap about it, cause they don’t luh dem hoes enough to care that much.
“I Got’cha Pictures, I Seen Ya…”
03/18/2010Every celeb at one point was just another kid in class with hopes of going on to do bigger and better shit. I definitely wanted to be one of those myself, back when I was walkin’ the halls and banging on tables in the cafeteria every day. I’ve had some classmates make the news in a whole ‘nother way, but that’s about it so far.
Not sure if anyone here’s checked out CelebritySchoolPics.com yet, but that shit’s had me rollin’ for the last three weeks. Everybody from George Bush to Pinky are on there, with pics from their younger days. I’ve been known to put some of my own ridiculous-ass old pictures up, so this shit’s right up my alley. Since this is DanjLovesThe90s, here’s a few old school photos of some folk you mighta heard of.
JoDeCiDal Thoughts
03/15/2010As evidenced in my previous entries about Dru Hill and SWV, some of the best and most remembered R&B groups of the ’90s are the ones who barely made it past their third album. There weren’t many that had some kinda long-running reign on top. Instead, they came through, made a gang of hits, and wrapped that shit up shortly thereafter. Another of these cases was that of Jodeci, four kids from North Carolina who came to New York on a whim and went home with an Uptown Records contract. K-Ci, JoJo, Dalvin, and Devante Swing were only a unit for about five years, but it was enough time to change the game.
DANJ! Presents Winter Six: 1999 (Makin’ Moves Y’all)
03/12/2010At the dead end of ’98, I moved back into Baltimore City, after spending about seven months out in the ‘burbs at my brother’s place. Within the first two weeks, I’d had a drunk pass out in front of my door and almost got caught in the crossfire of some nigga tryna shoot it out with the cops. Yeah, it was good to be back.
What’s Beef?
03/09/2010So it’s March 9th, most remembered in hip-hop as the date on which Bow Wow was born in 1987 The Notorious B.I.G. was murdered in 1997. As a fan of Big, and as a fan of hip-hop in general, it was just as major to me as Tupac‘s death was six months prior. You’ve prob’ly read a million times over how huge of a loss those deaths were, and you’ll prob’ly read it a million more, so I’ll spare y’all that. Matter fact, at the risk of bein’ a lil’ strange, I’d rather do my B.I.G. entry on his birthday than the death anniversary (make a note of May 21st). But if there is one good thing that came out of those events, it’s that the whole East Coast/West Coast shit started coming to a close.
I know people have since said that the “East Coast/West Coast War” was an isolated incident that was blown up by the media and hyped for the sake of controversy. There’s a good deal of truth in that statement, but let’s keep it one-hunnid: March 9, 1997 was the climax of some shit that had been quietly building up for years. Let’s talk about it…
DANJ! Presents Winter Six: 1998 (Year Of The Dog)
03/05/2010Aight, so as we near the end of the Winter Six series, we keep it movin’ with the year of 1998. Follow my lead on a jour-r-ney…
’90s Girls: Under The Radar
03/03/2010Since he’s pulling through and is expected to make a full recovery, is it too soon to joke that my GangStarr entry’s comment section flopped harder than a Guru solo album? HA! Wow Lovers, that’s how y’all feel?
Ayyy, it’s OK- everything can’t be a megahit. As a matter of fact, there’s a number of female R&B acts in the ’90s that were aiiight, but weren’t able to score one. They made some decent songs that briefly popped up and made a blip, and maybe even made the Video Soul Top 20 or some shit, but failed to make that career-changing breakthrough that all new artists hope for. I’ve previously spoken on some of the more popular ’90s Girls here and here, but here’s some from the mid-’90s who ended up flying waaay a little further under the radar.
