The 90s Loved… The 90s?

Some of y’all are familiar with my “The ’90s Loved The ’80s” series, right? Well, as fate would have it, the ’90s occasionally sampled some other joints from the ’90s as well. It mostly went on during the later half, although not as much as the rampant ’80s-jacking that went on. As I might’ve said once before, ’90s music still hasn’t been sampled as much as stuff from the previous decades, mostly because they were so busy sampling theirdamnselves during the ’90s. This entry is prime evidence of that, because there was so much sampling that some of the joints that didn’t contain samples… got sampled.

Confused? You won’t be, after this edition of… “The ’90s Loved The ’90s”. (Shoutout to whoever gets that reference)

Monica “Don’t Take It Personal” (1995) X LL Cool J “Back Seat” (1993): In ’93, on one of his uhhh… less good albums, LL still squeaked out a few decent tracks, one of them being his kinda-sorta hit, “Back Seat”. In it, he talks slick to a chick about lettin’ him smash in the back of his Jeep with her toes on the roof and whatnot. Surely, he didn’t think that two summers later, a 15-year-old named Monica Arnold would practically sing over the instrumental and make a bigger hit out of it. As a result, whenever you hear this beat, you can either get reminded of bonin’ in the back seat or a girl that’s goin’ through “one of them days”. Or both.

Montell Jordan feat. Flesh-n-Bone “Falling” (1996) X MC Eiht “Streiht Up Menace” (1993): Two personal favorites of mine, one being caused mostly by the existence of the other. Of course, if not for the eternally classic “Streiht Up Menace”, Montell coulda used his piano-playing skills to play something else. Still, since “…Menace” resulted in “Falling”, it’s a good thing it did exist. What am I goin’ on and on about? Who knows… both of these songs are the shit though.

Three 6 Mafia “Late Night Tip” (1997) X Lisa Fischer “How Can I Ease The Pain” (1991): One of the best ballads of the ’90s (IMO) gets altered for another “love” song of sorts. Lisa Fischer’s “How Can I…” is about a woman who constantly hurts because the love of her life continues to return and do more damage to her heart. Three 6′s joint, however, is more about what us kids in the ’90s referred to as… the late-night booty call. And that, in certain situations, is a great way to ease the pain.

Mariah Carey feat. Da Brat & Missy Elliott “Heartbreaker (Remix)” (1999) X Snoop Doggy Dogg “Ain’t No Fun” (1993): By the time ’99 rolled around, every little bit of nigga-dom that Mariah Carey was stripped of early in her career had been fully restored. From remixes with Mobb Deep to chillin’ with Da Brat on the regular, MC was doin’ her best to keep it as hood as she could. Speakin’ of Brat, she and Missy were featured on Mariah’s remix of “Heartbreaker”, produced by DJ Clue. It sampled Snoop’s classic “Ain’t No Fun”, and Mariah even sang her own adaptation of Nate Dogg‘s infamous guest verse. Wonder if it ever got played on WBALLS. Prob’ly not… it sucked.

Streiht Up Menace was the shiz. I bet MC Eiht was grateful that Montel let him collect a few more royalties off it.

I never got over ‘Streiht Up Menace’…even on the rare occasion I watch “Menace” on DVD, I don’t cut it off until it stops playin’ at the end, haha.

And yeah ‘Falling’ is one of those joints that were just ‘aight’ to me at the time, but I kinda rediscovered it a few years later and was feelin’ it seriouslyyyyy.
