Spirit of the Boogie

01/04/2011

So… I understand that Lauryn Hill closed out 2010 playing her ol’ crazy-ass reindeer games, eh? I can’t be too surprised though, as she’s seemed to revel in this reputation of constantly being late and putting on lackluster performances, yet still having people pay to see her. If there was ever an artist from the world of hip-hop whose career has become a tragedy over the last ten years, Lauryn is slowly but surely coming for that #1 spot, second only to DMX. It could’ve all been so simple, but she’d rather make it hard.

Queen B!tch, Supreme B!tch

10/13/2010

Man I tell ya- I still can’t get over this damn pic. Looked like she tucked a Hostess Sno-Ball in that shit… allllready! Uh, anyway…

15 years ago (or 16 if you count this), Lil’ Kim rapped her nasty-ass way into our hearts. It was the spring of ’95 when The Notorious B.I.G.‘s profile was growing with every single, remix, and guest appearance. During his rise to the top of the game, he announced plans to put out a new project by his weed carriers proteges, the Junior M.A.F.I.A. One of the group’s key members would be this female MC from around the way, whom he promised would be the new hot shit:

’90s Girls: Sistas With Voices

10/04/2010

Annnnd now, DLT90s comes to yet another in the ’90s Girls series. First time out, I covered some of the girl groups that had their share of hits. Second time, some of the teen acts that popped off. Third time was for the ones who never actually got that big single, but pumped out a decent single or two. This time around, this entry goes out to five more women of R&B who debuted and shined during the early-’90s- their biggest selling point being their singing ability. I know that’s a rare thing now, where most of the most popular R&B chicks are poppin’ because they can do a lil’ bit of everything just well enough to score a hit. But believe it or not, there was a time when a female singer could prosper with the right songs and vocal talents alone. Here’s five:

Girlfight

08/14/2010

Last year around this time, I was doin’ the Summer Seven Series, which still contains some of my favorite posts that I’ve dropped so far on this site. In hindsight, there’s a few songs I would have added in the place of others, but it is what it is. One in particular was for the summer of ’98- one that I couldn’t seem to get away from no matter what. If I was watchin’ MTV, it was on. If I watched BET, it was on. If I cut on the radio, I had to damn near listen to the country station to avoid hearin’ it. Of course, not doin’ anything that had to do with music was a way I coulda gotten away from it, but gimme a break.

…On The TLC Tip

07/29/2010

Unlike myself, my moms isn’t one that loves the ’90s. If she had a blog, it’d be about the ’60s and ’70s, with shit like “Motown Week” and entries about Earth, Wind, & Fire. She likes certain stuff from the ’80s, and mostly remembers the ’90s for being the decade I spent drivin’ her wild with tapes, records, and Rap City. However, there was one of a few groups she did care for during the decade- that being TLC.

The ’90s (And Mariah) Loved The ’80s

03/27/2010

So… today, Mariah Carey hits the big 4-0. Even though she tends to come off like the  old broad who thinks she’s still cool, and I’ve always been “blah” about most of her music, MC is aiiight with me. Matter fact, I’d wife her up if I was sure she didn’t have a drinking problem and she wasn’t wild’n out with Nick Cannon. She’s also a big ’80s R&B fan, as can be gathered by how many classic joints she’s revisited over the course of her career. There’s also that awful Glitter movie she made, but that’s neither here nor there. Here’s a few of her remixes from the late-’90s and the tracks they borrowed from.

(Oh, and don’t y’all go judgin’ me about seein’ Glitter- my niece used to fukk with that movie hard.)

Ladies’ Night!

03/24/2010

Along with a gang of other shit that’s declined in hip-hop over the years, female MCs have lost a lot of the presence they used to have. It’s always been a male-dominated game, but there was always some chicks on the mic makin’ their own moves. While there is one girl currently developing quite a buzz for herself, it’s been like five or six years since the last time, and that didn’t turn out too festive in the long run. In the ’90s, females stepped up to the plate more than they have in any other decade so far.

’90s Girls: Under The Radar

03/03/2010

Since he’s pulling through and is expected to make a full recovery, is it too soon to joke that my GangStarr entry’s comment section flopped harder than a Guru solo album? HA! Wow Lovers, that’s how y’all feel?

Ayyy, it’s OK- everything can’t be a megahit. As a matter of fact, there’s a number of female R&B acts in the ’90s that were aiiight, but weren’t able to score one. They made some decent songs that briefly popped up and made a blip, and maybe even made the Video Soul Top 20 or some shit, but failed to make that career-changing breakthrough that all new artists hope for. I’ve previously spoken on some of the more popular ’90s Girls here and here, but here’s some from the mid-’90s who ended up flying waaay a little further under the radar.

Baby Girl

01/16/2010

The first time I heard Aaliyah was in ’94, at the rec I worked at for my summer job. We usually played the radio all day, and “Back & Forth” was getting airplay out the ass. I wasn’t mad at it, but the one that really got me was the Isleys cover “At Your Best”, which became one of the few R&B songs of the time that I had serious love for. Of all the new singers that were poppin’ up back then, she had a couple of songs that helped her stand out from the pack (courtesy of her mentor and producer R. Kelly). It also didn’t hurt that she happened to be hot as all hell to a youngin like myself. If nothing else, she seemed like someone who’d at least be around for a while.

S, S, Double, Double U, To The V

12/01/2009

First off, welcome to December on DanjLovesThe90s, where I’ll not only be covering my usual ’90s madness, but a few notable things from this decade as well. Everyone’s done their best 50 albums and best 200 singles and best 500 Youtube videos and whatnot, so I won’t bother with that. But there’s some stuff I did wanna speak on, because I was still into music during the ’00s (although considerably less as the years went on).

But today, I’m here to talk about three girls who pretty much popped up out of nowhere in late-’92 and had become kinda like a big deal by mid-’93. Their original name prior to coming out was TLC (Taj, Lelee, & Coko), but due to the existence of this other group you may have heard of, they couldn’t keep it. Instead, they decided to call themselves Sisters With Voices, also known as SWV.
