DANJ! Presents: 25 For Love, Pt. 3 (#5-1)

02/18/2011

That’s the best shit. Making your girl happy man. Then after that, you know what it is! You gon’ go in there and you gon’ make love to her. But don’t make love to her without the MUSIC on! You gotta put that SLOW shit on and you fuck her reaaal slow.”- Ghostface Killah, via Twitter

I wish I could top that… but I ain’t even gonna put forth the effort. And so, with no further ado, and a shoutout to The Doors, we go from five to one right about… NOW:

DANJ! Presents: 25 For Love, Pt. 2 (#15-6)

02/16/2011

“I just zoned on how ill it is to really fall in love… Pimpin’ is whatev … Love is that shit!”- Kanye West via Twitter

If I can be allowed to get on some butter-soft shit before I go into these here luh songs… I think at times that I’ve been more in love with love than anyone in particular. I like songs about it, movies about it, I even like happy couples when I see ‘em at Wal-Mart n’shit. Even in having enough justification to hate the hell outta love, I still believe (shoutout to Brenda K. Starr). I wouldn’t say I’m a sucker for love, like them niggas who probably spent most of Monday posting bitter status updates on FaceBook. Still, a good song at the right time of year has been known to have me on Stupid Cupid mode. Case in point: the 10 I put up the other day, and now, these 10…

DANJ! Presents: 25 For Love, Pt. 1 (#25-16)

02/14/2011

I have a love/hate relationship with love songs. I’ve had times when I listened to them out of being in love or at least catchin’ some kinda feelings. Other times, I’ve listened to them while in “maaannn, fuck love” mode. There was a time when I was a kid who had no real grip on matters of the heart and all the highs and lows they entailed. Back then, I just liked the way they sounded. Nowadays, I feel the various emotions of those songs- whether they be about infatuation, bitterness, appreciation, or heartbreak. This week, I drop 25 in particular that I’ve loved for years and continue to. Here we go…

Bobby & Whitney: A Tale of Blood, Sweat, & Hell To The Naw

07/07/2010

Y’know… far be it for me to be into relationship drama involving artists who decide to shack up. I see the headlines like everyone else, but I’d be hard-pressed to remember much about what Jay-Z and Beyonce do, or who Lil’ Wayne will be knockin’ up next. I find the Nas/Kelis shit to be pretty got-damn wild because of how brutally Nasir’s been gettin’ his pockets raped since last year, but that’s about it. HOWEVER- there was one couple from the ’90s that always brought the laughs and SMH moments- the duo of Bobby Brown & Whitney Houston.

AllTime8: MJB Remixes

06/23/2010

Back in my day, there was one female R&B artist I rocked with heavy- that got-damn Mary J. Blige. There were some others who were good, others who were aight, others whose singles and videos I wasn’t mad at… but I wasn’t bumpin’ all their albums or anything. The chances of me walkin’ down the street (or sittin’ in my room for that matter) with Monica‘s Miss Thang in the headphones were unlikely. But MJB was something different. As I said when I covered the 411 joint about a year ago, she was damn near like a rapper in a singer’s body (but still, she SANG). The beats were hard, the singing was unpolished but strong, and her whole style was naturally hip-hop.

DANJ! Presents: Group Therapy, Pt. 1

05/25/2010

So… one day last week, I’m mindin’ my own business on Twitter, shootin’ the shit and whatnot. Suddenly, folk start talkin’ about the nominations for this year’s BET Awards. Now of course, I have no interest in seein’ the awards this year (especially after last year’s bullshit), but I go to check these nominees out anyway, right…

There’s three things I came away from it with: A) There’s no need for a Best Female Hip-Hop Artist category anymore, since there’s only one that’s been slightly relevant  in the last year,  B) Justin Bieber is the new face of blue-eyed soul (?), and C) R&B and Hip-Hop groups are at an all-time low. Any time The New Boyz (who have a total of one hit), Dirty Money (who haven’t dropped an album), and Young Money (who’s actually just a buncha solo artists who made an album together) are up for it… I guess all you gotta do is be a group to get into that category nowadays.

JoDeCiDal Thoughts

03/15/2010

As evidenced in my previous entries about Dru Hill and SWV, some of the best and most remembered R&B groups of the ’90s are the ones who barely made it past their third album. There weren’t many that had some kinda long-running reign on top. Instead, they came through, made a gang of hits, and wrapped that shit up shortly thereafter. Another of these cases was that of Jodeci, four kids from North Carolina who came to New York on a whim and went home with an Uptown Records contract. K-Ci, JoJo, Dalvin, and Devante Swing were only a unit for about five years, but it was enough time to change the game.

Like Sweet Mornin’ Dew

02/17/2010

Dating back as far as “The Message”, there’s a long list of classic hip-hop songs that the artists were initially resistant to doing. In some cases, the most recognizable singles of those artists’ careers were joints they weren’t all that crazy about. The list is impressive: “Walk This Way”, “Juicy”, “Ruff Ryders Anthem”… and the collaboration of Method Man & Mary J. Blige on “You’re All I Need To Get By”.
