Da Dirty 30: Strictly Hip-Hop

11/24/2010

Been a lil’ quiet around here lately, eh? Not to worry, I just had to put some work in so that I could bring you this shit right here…

Not sure how much of a secret this is- after all, I’ve only been doin’ this shit for a year and a half- but I’m a big huge gigantic hip-hop head. On here, I usually cover a lot of the more popular artists of the day, but it definitely doesn’t stop there. I’m that kid who stayed up on alllll them new shits, even the ones by the most obscure artists on the most low-profile record labels. My appreciation of rap music started around the mid-’80s, but it hit a fever pitch in the early-’90s and from then on. Once I’d really become immersed in the whole culture, I even went back and got further educated on the older music that was considered to be classic at the time.

It may sound cliche, but Hip-Hop was everything in my life at one point- almost to a fault, in fact. I’ve often cited that my fascination with rhyming, DJing, writing, performing, and listening to the music may have gotten in the way of all the other things life had to offer just a lil’ bit. Would I go back and change that? Prob’ly not. Because of that, I know I lot of great records that I likely wouldn’t have known of had I not been as plugged in as I was.

And so today, on the eve of Thanksgiving and my birthday, I give you another Dirty 30: not my absolute favorites or my official “best of”‘s, but definitely all tracks I ran hard with back when they dropped, and still do. Click, listen, download, enjoy, whatever you want… HERE WE GO!

DLT90s 1 Year Anniversary Special: THE FIDDY

06/01/2010

Doooo youuuu knoooow what todaaay is? It’s my anniversary. Yeaaah. Anniversary.

Lemme tell y’all a lil’ about me. If there’s one thing I love talkin’ about, it’s old music, movies, and TV. Actually that’s three things, but no need to be technical. I’m an admitted nostalgia addict. It’s almost a prerequisite that any future wife and/or ex-wife of mine will have to have this same quality, or shit prob’ly ain’t gonna work. There’ll be no Waka Flocka played at my our reception. Due to this addiction of sorts, and rediscovering my interest in writing over the last two years, I started DanjLovesThe90s one year ago today.

Da Dirty 30

11/25/2009

“You couldn’t pay me a milli to be born in the 80s. You guys can have Keyshia and Wayne. I have Mary and Biggie.” – dream hampton, October 2009

Mama told me one day it was gonna happen, but she never told me when. She said that it would happen when I was much older, I wish it woulda happened then. As of today, I am officially 30, and therefore officially an oldhead. Ah, well. *Kanye shrug*

I’ve been an oldhead for years anyway. Matter fact, I was lovin’ old music back when the old music I talk about on here was new. When I was 5 and Stevie Wonder was makin’ that “Part Time Lover” type shit, I was listening to his ’60s/’70s hits on my lil’ record player. Even as a teenager bumpin’ Mobb Deep and Jay-Z, I was still buyin’ Kane and EPMD tapes from the late-’80s.

Old movies and TV shows? Ditto! I still watch old Martin and Married With Children episodes like I haven’t seen ‘em a GANG of times already. I just bought Krush Groove on DVD, and I remember when it was a new release at the video store. I SAW Gremlins IN THE MOVIES for fukk’s sake. *cringes*

I say all that to say this: it’s all good. You’ll get no “30′s the new 20″ talk outta me- I willingly embrace my oldassness. Would I trade this shit to be 15, wearin’ tight jeans and doin’ the “You’re A Jerk” dance or whatever they call it? Hell nah. Would I rather be 10 years younger and likely have an infinite Gucci Mane playlist on my iPod? FUKK no! #NoShots at the young people at all, I’m just sayin’… not for me. See, I may be old enough to fondly recall stuff that the youngins don’t give a damn about, but I’m glad to have been there. I take pride in all my ancient shit- from that red and blue Helly Hansen jacket that’s still hangin’ up in my closet, to the purple tape I still own.

Annnd so, to all my fellow oldheads (30 and up), oldheads in training (25-29), and future oldheads (teens-early 20′s) who’ve been checkin’ out DanjLovesThe90s: today, I celebrate my life AND old shit. I give you... Da Dirty 30. No definitive list or anything of the sort, just 30 random ’90s joints I fux with, and now you can too (if you don’t already). Click away… Read the rest of this entry »

This Is The New Stuff!

11/06/2009

new!

A cassette of Jock Jams, Vol. 2 and a King Just t-shirt goes to the lucky soul that can correctly identify where I got the title of this entry from. Don’t let the fringe benefits pass you by.

In between listening to lots and lots of old shit, I sometimes decide to live dangerously and check out some new shit too. Every now and then, I come across a song that forces me to repeatedly listen to it- and by choice, not by default like how the radio does. Over the last week or so, these five have found space in my iPod, somewhere between my L.A. & Babyface playlist and more K-Solo songs than I should prob’ly have. Check ‘em out:

alicia keys owwwwww

Alicia Keys “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”: My favorite home-wrecker and yours is about to drop her fourth album, The Element of Freedom, next month. Her lead single “Doesn’t Mean Anything” was aight, but I liked it better when it was called “If I Ain’t Got You”. Her new one “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart”, however, is more like it. If this song doesn’t become a huge damn deal, there is a problem with society at large.

clipse!

Clipse feat. Cam’ron “Popular Demand (Popeye’s)”: I’ve been a fan of Clipse since “Grindin’” smashed the streets about eight years back (wow). I’ve also been a supporter of Cam’s retardedly wacky wordplay for a good 12 years. And then there’s The Neptunes, who I spent a good four years stanning earlier in this decade. All of these components together, and it’s a no-brainer that I’m rockin’ with this shit here. Daaaaaaaamn.

amerie cover

Amerie feat. Trey Songz “Pretty Brown”: Maybe it’s the Mint Condition sample, maybe it’s not- but I’m fukkin’ with this all day. Along with Trey Songz (who took time off from inventing sex and whatnot), Amerie drops one of those occasional magic songs she’s been capable of every once in a blue. Def Jam better get on their job.

72713224SG011_BETs_106_Park

50 Cent feat. Eminem “Psycho”: Much like the homie DMX, Fiddy’s music pretty much covered all the ground it’ll ever cover yeeeaaaarrrs ago. BUT I do still enjoy his interviews, and he still slides thru with some good shit from time to time. This new joint from Before I Self Destruct features Eminem, and they both go somethin’ kinda hard (as they’ve been known to do when they collab).

ryan leslie on the boards

Ryan Leslie “Zodiac”: Shoutout to Dart Adams for puttin’ me up on this one via his site, Poisonous Paragraphs. R. Les’ new album Transition ain’t half damn bad, and “Zodiac” is the one I’ve been stuck on since I’ve downloaded heard it. Dumb lyrics aside, I can’t help but clap and hit a lil’ semi-step to this shit, and that’s really good enough for me. Shoutout to the Aries and Leo ladies… we’re compatible, babeh.

Next week is Wu-Week. It ain’t what you want babeh, it’s what you need babeh. Until then, y’all have a good weekend… and yeah, “F” love.

DANJ! Presents: One Hitta Quittas, Vol. 1

10/28/2009

that thing you do

I don’t know what to tell y’all. That Young Menace shit really made my got-damn week. In keeping with the “Whatever Happened To…” theme, I’d like to dedicate today’s entry to four artists who have provided my iPod with a good damn 16 minutes’ worth of music. Of course, I’ve proven that I can do entries about those artists who really did their thing in the ’90s, but why not take time out for the nigga who made “Return Of The Mack”? Today, I give you… One Hitta Quittas, Vol. 1. POW, punk ass!

oochie coochie la la la

MC Brains “Oochie Coochie” (1991): Remember back when Michael Bivins put out Another Bad Creation, then Boyz II Men, then he ended up with like 73 artists signed to his Biv 10 label? One of those was the pride of Cleveland, Ohio… MC Brains. This lil’ catchy number dropped in late-’91 and had the middle school dances jumpin’ around my way. My favorite lyric was always “Lisa, Kim, Angela, Monique/ Them are some freaks with some big physiques”. The “big physiques” part still cracks me up- it sounds like he’s talkin’ about female wrestlers or some shit. Anyway, he followed up this hit with a single called “Everybody’s Talkin’ About MC Brains”… and then, well… go ‘head and finish that however you want.

DRS Gangsta Lean

DRS “Gangsta Lean (This Is For My Homies)” (1993): Ah yeah. ’93 was mo’ gangsta than a muh’fukka. From The Chronic to Menace II Society to Tupac shootin’ cops and rapin’ girls in the ass, Cali was killin’! Naturally, the suits at Capitol Records figured, “hey, it’s workin’ for the rappers- why not an R&B group?” Enter DRS, a.k.a. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and one of the best/worst songs of the year. Tell me you don’t wanna sing along and laugh at the same time when the one nigga says “tell him put down those dice for a second, Lord… listen to his HOMIEEE!” It wasn’t necessarily an awful song- but how much longevity could a group dressed as gangbangers (pause) actually have? Seriously, what was their next song gonna be about? Jackin’ niggas and doin’ drive-bys? I guess the public felt the same way, because “Gangsta Lean” was the beginning and end of DRS.

Skee-Lo

Skee-Lo “I Wish” (1995): I don’t know if an artist has ever made a hit song about physical limitations and gone on to further success. The only exception might be this shit right here, but he was already deep in his career. Skee-Lo, on the other hand, came out the gate wishing for more height. He also wished to be a baller with a good-lookin’ girl, a rabbit in a hat with a bat (?), and a ’64 Impala. The summer of ’95 was good to him, as this song landed him all over radio and MTV. Then, September arrived, and Skee was wishing to score another hit. Instead, he got a spot on the Money Train soundtrack. Fair enough.

Return Of The Mack

Mark Morrison “Return Of The Mack” (1997): As possibly the only nigro in the late-’90s still rockin’ a Gumby fade, Mark Morrison took his hit from Germany and brought it over here a year later. With a catchy-ass hook and a voice that gave hope to Akon, Mizark got it poppin’ in the spring of ’97 with “Return Of The Mack”.  After this one came and went, the mack returned to Germany and can now be seen opening for David Hasselhoff. That could be a joke, but maybe it’s not. While I’m on the subject, this is another one of those songs that I coulda confessed to liking. I denied it for a good while, especially when it was out… but I do. But I do, do, do.

As y’all well know, it doesn’t stop there- the list, much like the beat, goes on. I’ll be covering more of these in future entries, as there are a lot to choose from. In some ways, one hit wonders are special. Sure, they work at GameStop today, and they probably get their “one lil’ hit” thrown in their faces every time they get into an argument with their significant others. But for three to four months of someone’s life, they were the shit, and no bitch-ass manager or girlfriend can take that away from them.

-D!

(so… who are some your favorite One Hitta Quittas?)

Freestyle Friday!

Cam+and+Cardan

Can’t lie… the Clue retro got me in that zone. BONUS!

(You know the drill- you want ‘em… click ‘em.)

Nas & Foxy Brown (1997): With Firm Biz in full swing, Nas Escobar and the Brown Fox drop gems on ‘em. I could do without the visual of Nas “bustin’ a nut on his fist”, but whatever works.

Killa Cam & Cardan (1997): A pre-Dipset Cam’ron and a pre-puberty Cardan go hard… LOL @ Cam “tryna sell records like Julio Iglesias“.

DMX & The Lox (1997): Before this beat went on to be used for his hit “Get At Me Dog”, a virtually-unknown X links up with Bad Boy‘s (then) latest act, The LOX. Jadakiss for the win, by the way.

Canibus (1997): Prior to all kinds of fuckery, Canibus was one of the most-anticipated new cats in the game. What an introduction.

Big L & McGruff (1998): The late great L and Harlem’s unsung legend Herb McGruff go in for Clue. Pause.

Mase, Killa Cam, Cardan, Noreaga, Imam T.H.U.G., and Tragedy (1997): For eight minutes, Biggies “Who Shot Ya” and Dre’s “Bitches Ain’t Shit” instrumentals get jacked by the Harlem/Queensbridge connection.

Shyne & Fabolous (1999): While both were still in the shadows of the rappers they sounded like (Biggie for Shyne, Mase for Fab), these two Brooklyn reps put it down for the mixtapes in ’99.

Beanie Sigel & Memphis Bleek (1999): Known as the “1000 Bars” freestyle, this was Beanie’s first jump into the mixtape scene. He and fellow Roc representer Bleek get it on.

Ready for Summer? Get back at me on Monday!

The Genesis (Intro)

“Whatever music you was listenin’ to when you first started gettin’ laid is always gonna be your favorite music!“- Chris Rock

I wish I could start off by telling some elaborate story of how I contemplated and formulated some grand idea for this blog. Closer to the truth, I suddenly decided that I’d create one and then wondered what in the hell I could base it around. After giving it (very) brief thought, I decided that the thing I’m best at talking about is the thing I love most: the music I grew up on.

Props to movies and TV (which I’ll also be covering), but music was THE thing for me, first and foremost. As a child in B-More, I grew up in a house where the radio STAYED on. At 8:02 a.m., I got dressed for school with music in the background. At 3:57 p.m., I’d come home and hear it before I got in the door. At 7:45 p.m., I came in from playing outside to the sounds of whatever song V103 was playing. As a result, it was only a formality for me to become hooked on music myself. By ’87, I’d taped so many videos, my upstairs neighbor referred to me as “Video King”.

I loved (and still love) a lot of ’80s music of all genres, but I REALLY got locked in during the ’90s. It was the decade in which I not only listened to music… I also made it, spun it at parties, read about it, wrote about it in my school newspaper,  talked about it, and simply LIVED it.  I woke up and went to sleep to it. I got smoked out and intoxicated to it. And YEP, I even got laid to it. There’s music of other genres that occasionally struck me, but the Hip-Hop and R&B of that decade was (as they say) the soundtrack of my life during the coming-of-age stage.

I’ll be quick to admit, I’m not as crazy about it as I once was. I’ve long ago reached that point that most adults eventually reach, when they’re nowhere near the fans they were at say, 15 or so. I do feel like there are some things SORELY missing from today’s Urban music that shouldn’t be. On the other hand, I’m not as concerned with “mourning the death” as are many who prefer to ride the lame-ass “Hip-Hop Is Dead” train. If it is, in fact, dead- I’d rather do just as they implore us to do at funerals: celebrate the life.

Annnnd so, here is DanjLovesThe90s. I hope that you find it entertaining, reflective, celebratory, critical, comical, and anything else it happens to be depending on the entry. Whether you were a Hip-Hop Head or an R&B Swinger, a pre-teen or an adult, East Coast or West Coast… this is for those who either remember the decade fondly or are curious as to what was so great. I plan to chronicle not only my youth, but that of many others like myself who experienced some of these things firsthand. From calling up videos on The Box to seeing Menace II Society in the theater, I will be speakin’ on it.

In honor of the jumpoff, here’s 10 to grow on (if you want ‘em, click ‘em). For the record, I coulda gone a lot harder than this, which I will in many coming entries. Butt In The Meantiiiime…

LL Cool J “Around The Way Girl” (1990)
