As I’ve said a few times before, I’ve always appreciated hip-hop no matter where it came from. I didn’t care if a nigga was from Iowa- if it rocked, it rocked. That said, there was a particular time where my ears were most partial to what was regarded as the East Coast sound. Unlike these more recent years, New York was breeding great new music on a regular basis. Some of the best from that era weren’t those that made a killing on the charts or radio, but the ones that resonated amongst the underground/street level listeners. When it came to producers that made music more for the late-night mix shows than the regular rotation, few had that corner locked like DJ Premier did.
Recap The Bells
08/30/2010So… yesterday was an eventful day for a lotta hip-hop aficionados such as myself at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in DC. I’d never been to a Rock The Bells Festival, but I made it a point to make it there this year, callin’ around since way back in May to see who was ready to roll. We made it there, and it was well worth the admission. I didn’t catch much on the second stage, mostly because the main stage was MAJOR this year- with Snoop, Wu-Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill, Rakim, KRS-One, and Slick Rick all touchin’ the stage. I was amped when I woke up, amped when we got there, and still amped when we left. In between all that, here’s the shit that stood out- for better or worse. Here we go…
The Chain & The Star
03/01/2010First off, welcome to March on DanjLovesThe90s, where I’ll be speakin’ on a lil’ of everything from that East Coast/West Coast sitchyation to how much Mariah Carey loved the ’80s. But now, on to today’s topic…
Yesterday afternoon, it was announced that Keith Elam, a.k.a. The Guru of GangStarr has gone into cardiac arrest and is currently in a coma. According to DJ Premier, he’s due to undergo surgery today. The first time I saw this news, it was via Twitter, along with a lot of Guru quotables tweeted by those on my timeline. I’m not ready to put the man in the casket just yet, but it did inspire today’s entry, as I’ve been a GangStarr fan since late-’90/early ’91.
